Manchester is a major city in the northwest of England with a rich industrial heritage. Whilst in the city, why not take the time to enjoy the local culture and what the city has to offer. 

At the bottom of the page is an interactive map of Manchester that characterises the differing vibes of different parts of the city and suggests places to dine and socialise after a long day listening to conference talks. These are all places that have been personally tested and vetted by Alex and David, a discerning pair of Mancunian evolutionary biologists.

Below are just some examples of places to see and things to do during any spare time you may have in Manchester.

Culture 

Manchester is one of the UK’s leading cultural cities. The Manchester Art Gallery, just a short walk from Manchester Central, houses some of the UK’s finest works of art as well as playing host to major touring exhibitions. The Lowry, a little further out of town at Salford Quays houses an unrivalled collection of the drawings and paintings of one of the north of England’s most-loved artists, LS Lowry. 

Music & Nightlife 

Manchester is home to some of the UK’s most famous bands. The Smiths, Oasis, Joy Division, New Order and Take That all call Manchester home. Why not try and catch some live music whilst you’re in the city.  

Manchester has a huge range of bars, clubs and restaurants. Alberts Schloss is a highly recommended night out. You can usually find live music, fun and laughter wherever you go in the city. 

Dining

Manchester has an incredibly varied number of cuisines on offer. A trip to Chinatown is highly recommended during your stay.  

Shopping 

Manchester has a large bustling shopping district a short walk from Manchester .

Football

Manchester boasts two of the most successful football clubs in Europe – City and United. Visits to both Old Trafford and the Etihad are recommended. If football is your passion a visit to the National Football Museum is a must. Just a 10-minute walk from Manchester Central the museum is home to a huge number of exhibits detailing the past, present and future of the world’s greatest game.
